Postcards from the Mediterranean
“Greeting from my travels!”
-Claudia Ender
I’ve long had Greece on my bucket list. I’ve always been fascinated by the stories of the gods and how this land was created anew, over and over again.
It amazes me that ancient people built cities on top of mountains and islands with few resources and little more than their hands. What they did have was stone and marble. Repurposing the ruins of their old temples after natural disasters and invasions, they simply erected new ones. All of Greece is an archaeological site.
The waters of the Aegean and Adriatic are a blue that looks as if it has been hand-dyed – unreal and mesmerizing where it meets its rocky shores.
I purchased an old coin dated from Alexander the Great. I love just holding it and turning it over in my fingers. I wonder if someday a thousand years from now, someone will unearth one of my creations and wonder who wore it, who made it and what life was like back then – just as I’m doing with this coin.
We end our journey in Venice, a magical place rich in design and a thriving merchant history that has long been entwined with all the places we’ve been on our trip. As we simply savor these last few days a world away from home, I’m reminded that we have always been interconnected, through culture and art and commerce, just as we continue to be.
Ciao!
