A PEEK INSIDE THE CUSTOM CONCEPTING PROCESS

As a custom jeweler, I often think of my work as one of artful inquiry. Sometimes my clients come to me with a very clear vision. Other times they are trying to evoke a feeling. While the process of design is similar with each client, the exchange of ideas and inspiration takes on a life of its own, ebbing and flowing from my clients to me, resonating when we touch on meaning, sparking delight when the feeling is shared.

My job is to weave together the unfolding narrative, interpreting what is important to the emerging concept and how to translate its meaning into the final piece of jewelry.

Recently a client came to me to create his wedding band. He referenced a 3-ring interlocking band his father wore as inspiration for his own. To help him hone in on what felt right and true for his own, I created three unique concepts for him to “try on”.

**CONCEPT B**

THEMES: *3 Ring like Father, Community, Movement, Contrasts, Curves, Textures, Masculine/Feminine, Clean Silhouette Harmony, Flow*

**CONCEPT C**

THEMES: *Refashioned, Creation, Repair, Reinvent, Repurpose, Rebirth, Contrasts, Healing, 3 Lines Representing Ring of Father, Intersections, Kintsugi*
*The focus here is on the kintsugi on simple forms.*

Where a project starts and where it ends are often two very different places. But this is the true beauty of the custom design process.

It is such a privilege to ask the poignant questions that get us to the heart of what is wanting to happen. At times vulnerable and always poignant, helping my clients share their innermost thoughts and feelings is where all the magic begins.
