Happy New Year

Today, as I work my way through the turbulence of the first full week of this new year, I was reminded of the difference between “holding on” versus “holding my own.” Holding on implies bracing ourselves for something – it asks us to hang on tight because the journey is rough, and that getting through the external forces will bring relief. Holding my own, means anchoring to my own experience, embracing the life I live, and choosing thoughtfully how to spend the time I have, come rain or shine.

Change is constant, never sitting still. Its companion, time, waits for no one. The days and years rush by bringing things we have no control of or over. But even in the face of all this, we can choose to hold our own. So whatever you are facing, no matter what you are being asked to hold, I invite you to join me in simply being in this moment. Breath deeply. Observe what is in front of you, feel the hand in yours if you’re lucky to hold one. Hold your intention, watch the sea creatures carry their shells across the rocks, sing your favorite song, express your love to those near or far, watch the tide rise and recede, ride this wave. Or simply dance around your living room, experiencing this life as only you can, holding your own. Then laugh and cry and give praise for the gift of it.

May 2021 bring us new ways to notice what happens when we let go and hold our own. May we emerge stronger and more resilient for it.

Cheers,
Claudia xo
