Unexpectedly Inspired
In winter, when the landscape changes so drastically, and the greens of deciduous trees drop to give way to shades of grey and brown, this muted palette makes color inescapable. Never one to be too fond of purple (more on that below), I have found myself seeing this color in a new light. It has captured my attention when taking walks It has captured my attention when taking walks around The Brewery where I live. It demanded my attention when visiting Monet’s Water Lilies in Paris last year. It has captivated me when watching the colors change on clouded wintery sunsets. Purple began to whisper to me that we are on the verge of a brand new relationship.
To my great delight, I was struck recently by the deep purple amethysts of Zava Mastercuts. Skillfully cut, these gemstones screamed with saturation and scintillation of blues and hot pinks. Like magic, I became mesmerized and had to bring some home to work with.
But it wasn’t always this way. You see, purple and I have a less than glowing history. It definitely has something to do with my mother’s affinity for all things purple – the 70’s wallpaper, shag rugs, and even her sedan are all indelibly etched in my memory in shades of lavender, lilac and burgundy. Years later, my now-husband showed up to our first date in his purple truck. I feared I’d never escape it. But time has a funny way of putting things in perspective. Once so rare that it was reserved only for royalty, I suspect that both my mother and my love are drawn to it for its regalness. Looking back over my personal history, I see the color now with a new fondness, something akin to nostalgia.
Though its many hues might have different names, I have a new appreciation for all its shades. Now I notice it everywhere I go. It never ceases to amaze me how the right inspiration can bring about even the most unexpected changes.
As we settle into the depths of winter, what colors bring you joy?
