Inner Jester
The arrival of Spring and its gift of renewal has made me realize how ready I am to unburden myself from the heavy mantle of Winter. I completely forgot to have fun or play any practical jokes on April Fool’s Day. Talk about missed opportunities! But sometimes we need to experience the lack of something to realize just how very much we need it.
This week I built a fairy house with my goddaughter and it ended up being just what I needed to bring in a little light. At first I felt self-conscious about the project, even a little childish –but then I got caught up in it. I became totally immersed in building something with no real purpose: It didn’t need to have any structural integrity and for once I wasn’t driven by the “wow factor” for a client. Nothing about it had to be perfect. It was purely for fun and to engage imagination. I’ll tell you, it did wonders for my spirit and, in the process, I learned something important about the power of unfettered exploration and play!
Please indulge me by letting your inner jester out to play by doing something just for fun this week. Write a bunch of jokes on sticky notes and hide them around the house. Pick a bouquet of wildflowers. Blow some bubbles in the sunshine. Go for a bike ride, play a game, get a coloring book, or build a blanket fort in your living room and watch your favorite childhood movie. Anything that feels playful or uses your imagination is a great start. Notice what the freedom of play does for you. And as always, I would love to hear what you did and what you learned from giving yourself the permission to be the jester, even if just for a little while.
