Romancing the Stone
Often I find the process of my custom work surprises me in both unexpected and delightful ways. I recently started working with a client who discovered she had a stunning 4 carat Colombian emerald in a delicate setting that had been lost to the depths of a drawer, rarely worn. So she came to me wanting to transform it into something more her style that she could wear every day.
We discussed several design ideas and from that conversation I created some renderings. She selected the one that resonated with her most and then I created a wax model. She liked it but still felt like she wanted to explore more options. I sat with the stone, turning it over in my hands, inviting it to tell us what it wanted to become for her. We both took some time to think about what she was after – and this is where the magic happened.
She soon came back with another idea, so again we talked and I created another wax for her to consider. When we met, I presented both waxes to her and, sure enough, the newest design called to her and her decision then became an easy one.
Sometimes the custom process is quick and direct. Other times it is creative and less linear, but no less gratifying. And sometimes when we’re really lucky, we hear the muse like a clarion call – that inspiration that seems to effortlessly guide us with an energetic clarity. This gorgeous stone spoke and we received its message.
In just a few short weeks, it will be held in its new setting – an asymmetrical design that really showcases its beauty through the tension of contrasting shapes. I cannot wait to see this Colombian treasure in yellow gold – stay tuned to see the final results!
